Those of you who follow me on Insta already know that my boy is home. (I affectionately refer to my kids as “the boy” and “the girl”. It may sound harsh in American culture, but these are terms of endearment in my culture, though they can be used in other ways). You also know how much I have missed him over the last few months since he left to study abroad. I have missed his energy around the house, and my daughter and I have missed having someone else in the house who takes out the trash. Most importantly, I have missed the loads of food that he eats. I have cooked so little in the last few months since the rest of us barely eat. It’s nice to have both kids home.
My son is my adventure buddy. He is a risk-taker, and his motto is to try everything at least once. I love to snorkel with him. This past summer, at 16, he earned his scuba diving certification. I love to hunt for baby sharks, turtles, sting rays, colorful fish and admire beautiful corals with him. Unlike my daughter, a couple of years ago, he opted to go paragliding with me on our family trip of a lifetime in Hawai’i. One day, I plan on jumping out of a plane with him. He keeps me young, adventurous, and less boring as I grow older.
As the high school days and years go by, my husband and I savor more and more our time with both of our kids. It seems like most of the years that they will spend living with us are already gone. I enjoy watching them grow into young adults, learning from them, watching them mature as young people, evolve their stances and thinking on various issues. I also enjoy watching them choose their friends and spend time with them.
